[…] WINONA, Minn. – The Theatre du Mississippi will help students at Washington-Kosciusko Elementary School write and put on their own original theatre production about the legacy of John Latsch this coming spring from February to late April. In addition to putting on the original play, which will premiere on Friday, April 28, at 7p.m., the students will learn in class about the history behind John Latsch State Park, and what Latsch did for the Winona community. Originality and a historical connection are important components to the Theatre du Mississippi. Theatre du Mississippi is a non-profit theatre located in downtown Winona. The theatre puts on three to five shows every year, each with an original script and a focus on a unique element of Winona’s rich history. Theatre du Mississippi wants to share this passion and knowledge with the children of the community and show them the value of both the arts and local history. “It’s important for children to understand the history of where they’re growing up, and to learn how to work with others to create something original from start to finish. We just want to share our love of theatre and knowledge of Winona’s history, and help these kids learn and accomplish something they can be proud of,” says Theatre du Mississippi President Paul Sannerud. The play will be held in the WK Elementary School Auditorium, and will be free and open to the public. Theatre du Mississippi, founded in 1977, is committed to the development and production of high-quality programs in the performing arts, particularly those that address important contemporary or historical issues. It aims to integrate artistic excellence and originality with a sense of community in Winona and the surrounding areas.
